Spatial Design – Concept Execution & Modular Systems
Exactly one year ago, we began developing and executing the design of a gallery within the Jewish Museum Curacao. Within the framework of the overall concept, there was room for us to contribute our own design expertise and ideas. This included designing the long modular wall and short modular wall, as well as additional elements such as graphic backgrounds, signage, and furniture solutions.
Design execution
– Modular walls: Long and short modular walls designed to allow flexibility for future updates, multimedia integration, and exhibition rotation.
– Graphics & signage: Backgrounds, labels, and informational signs designed to align with the museum’s corporate identity and enhance visitor experience.|
– Furniture solutions: Entire furniture wall planned, calculated, and drawn to ensure functionality, safety, and visual coherence.
– Multimedia integration: Spaces planned to accommodate screens, projections, and interactive elements without overwhelming the physical exhibits.
Challenges & solutions
– Balancing concept and creativity: Worked within Cleo de Brabander’s overall concept while adding our own design solutions.
– Technical precision: Furniture had to be fully calculated and drawn to fit the space and ensure safety.
– Object restoration: Coordinated the restoration of a model damaged during transport, reintegrating it into the exhibition.
– Flexible design: All elements designed for future adaptability, including movable walls and modular systems.
Collaboration
Throughout the project, we collaborated closely with the client’s content team, who provided historical context and material. This ensured that design and content were aligned seamlessly, resulting in a coherent narrative and immersive visitor experience.
Outcome / Reflection
– Flexible and modular gallery, capable of evolving over time
– Cohesive integration of content, furniture, graphics, and modular walls
– Visitors can explore the space comfortably while experiencing a rich, immersive story
– Demonstrates how strategic design solutions can complement an existing concept while allowing for team creativity
